Educational Psychology: Quantitative Research Methods
Instructive Psychology: Quantitative Research Methods Rachel Price Select a mental train and Identify the essential research strategies and designsâ used in that discipline, and consider why that might be the situation. This task will take a gander at a number research strategies and structures utilized in Educational Psychology. While there are various research strategies and structures utilized in Educational Psychology this task will concentrate on the utilization of quantitative research in the types of meetings, surveys and contextual investigations and will likewise talk about quantitative research as psychometric testing utilized in the appraisal of dyslexia, for example, the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (Wechsler 1949) and the Kaufman evaluation battery for youngsters (Kaufman, 1983) and why every one of the techniques examined are utilized, while taking a gander at the legitimacy and restrictions of the strategies and plan. Instructive Psychology is characterized by Wittrock (1989) as the logical order worried about the turn of events, assessment, application and standards and hypotheses of human learning. Instructive Psychologists complete research when they inspect the psychological advancement of small kids, investigate the connection between instructors inclinations, instructive encounters and study hall execution, and control the basic highlights of exercises and study that bring about understudy cooperation levels or investigate the issues related with the collaboration of educators and students and learning settings in circumstances (Berliner Calfee, 2004). Alexander and Winne, (2006) propose these territories of research add to the study of learning and help create rules for viable study hall rehearses. The two research techniques that impact logical instructive research are quantitative and subjective methodologies. Instructive research will in general be a blend of both quantitative and subjective research techniques (Williams, 2011). Quantitative research techniques are basically test in nature and worried about the causal connections among reliant and autonomous factors, while subjective research strategies are fundamentally non-exploratory and worried about distinguishing and portraying topics hidden human experience or the experience of a specific marvel (Della Porta Keating, 2008). Willis (2008) contends that quantitative and subjective research strategies are frequently get components or procedures from one another. For instance, program-assessment inquire about, activity research, and educator as-specialist techniques are types of blended instructive research plan that utilization components of both quantitative and subjective procedures (Johnson, Christensen, 2008). Instructive clinicians depend on quantitative based research techniques to assist them with settling on choices about school projects and practices (Slavin, 2002). Stanovich and Stanovich (2003) characterize quantitative based research as a type of study that utilizes precise techniques that draw on cautious perception or experimentation so as to make substantial, tenable and solid, ends. The science part of instructive brain research looks to sort reality from fiction by utilizing specific procedures for acquiring data (Johnson Christensen, 2000; Kawachi, Kennedy Glass, 1999). Wolfe (2010) contends that the specialty of instructive brain science lies in interpreting experimentally legitimate and solid data into suitable and viable study hall practice. Quantitative research is objective, testable, and methodical ( Kothari, 2011). Gravetter and Forzano, (2015) propose that It lessens the probability that data will be founded on close to home convictions, sentiments and conclusions. Quantitative research depends on the logical strategy, a methodology that can be utilized to find exact data. It incorporates these means: conceptualize the issue, gather information, reach determinations, and reexamine inquire about ends and hypothesis( Cronbach, 1957).Once information has been gathered, instructive analysts utilize factual systems to comprehend the importance of their quantitative information to help make inferences. They additionally contrast their discoveries and what others have found about a similar issue. The last advance in the logical strategy is overhauling research ends and hypothesis (Mertens, 2014).Slavin and Davis, (2006) recommend that instructive analysts have created various speculations about the most ideal ways for unde rstudies to learn McInerney, (2005) recommends that when an instructive therapist needs to test a speculation they can browse numerous techniques, for example, perception .Scientific perception is exceptionally orderly. It requires comprehending what is being searched for, directing perceptions in a fair way, precisely recording and sorting what was seen, and viably imparting these perceptions (Hersen, Haynes Heiby, 2003). A typical method to record perceptions is to record them, utilizing shorthand or images. Likewise, recording devices, camcorders, unique coding sheets, single direction mirrors, and PCs can be utilized to mention objective facts increasingly proficient. (Coolican, 2009). Instructive clinicians direct research in labs at the colleges where they work and educate, despite the fact that labs regularly assist specialists with increasing more control in their investigations, they have been condemned as being counterfeit. In illustrative perception, conduct is seen out in reality (McInerne y, 2005).Educational analysts direct authentic perceptions of youngsters in study halls, at exhibition halls, on play areas, in homes, in neighborhoods, and in different settings (Gã ¶ncã ¼, Jain Tuermer, 2007). Instructive therapists use meetings and surveys to get some answers concerning studentsââ¬â¢ and teachersââ¬â¢ encounters (Vaughn, Schumm Sinagub, 1996). Meetings typically occur vis-à -vis, in spite of the fact that they should be possible via telephone or the Internet though surveys are normally given to people in printed shape and can be rounded out from multiple points of view, for example, face to face, via mail, or through the Internet (Coolican, 2009). Great meetings and overviews include solid, explicit, and unambiguous inquiries and a few methods for checking the realness of the respondentsââ¬â¢ answers (Ritchie, Lewis, Nicholls Ormston, 2013). Anyway Fowler (2008) contends that meetings and reviews are not without issues. One essential impediment is that numerous people offer socially alluring responses, reacting in a way they believe is most socially worthy and attractive as opposed to how they really think or feel. For instance, a few instructors, when met or req uested to round out a poll about their showing rehearses, waver to concede sincerely how as often as possible they rebuke or censure their understudies (Loughran, 2002). Talented meeting procedures and questions that expansion frank reactions are critical to acquiring exact data. Another issue with meetings and overviews is that the respondents some of the time just falsehood (Coolican, 2009). Another kind of research technique utilized by instructive clinicians are contextual analyses (Woolfson, 2011). Crosling Webb, ( 2002) characterize contextual investigations as portrayals of ââ¬Å"real-lifeâ⬠encounters that delineate significant ideas and issues in a field of study . At the end of the day, a contextual analysis is an inside and out assessment of an individual or circumstance A contextual investigation presents a remarkable technique for joining hypothesis and practice in a critical thinking system. Contextual investigations vary from spoken or composed articulations, in that they normally don't contain results or ends, however leave the peruser to consider the most fitting game-plan (Crosling Webb, 2002).Traditionally, contextual analyses have been related with business, medication, and law. As of late, in any case, contextual analyses progressively have been utilized in training to support instructors and educator competitors create fundamental issue acknowle dgment and goals aptitudes (Clandinin Connelly, 2000; Elliott, Woloshyn, DiPetta, Bennett, 2000). Instructive Psychologists utilize psychometric testing during the appraisal for dyslexia. Lyon, Shaywitz and Shaywitz (2003) characterize dyslexia as a particular learning trouble that is startling corresponding to a people subjective capacities. Psychometric testing strategies, for example, the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) (Wechsler 1949), which is an exclusively managed insight test intended for kids between the ages of six and sixteen (Cohen, 2011) and contains fifteen subtests that give a complete evaluation of scholarly capacity which are separated into ten center subtests and five supplemental subtests (Grizzle, 2011). The Wechsler Individual Achievement Tests (WIAT) (Wechsler, 1992) is likewise utilized, and is an exhaustive test that evaluates scholarly accomplishment by testing the capacity to apply subjective aptitudes and information to reviewed desires It alsoincludes nine subtests intended to survey explicit zones inside the regions of perusing, scienc e, composed language, and oral language (Johnson, 2011) Another psychometric test utilized in the appraisal of dyslexia is the Kaufman appraisal battery for youngsters (KABC)( Kaufman, 1983), which is a reliable and substantial proportion of intellectual capacities for kids matured three to eighteen (Hall Noggle, 2011). Psychometric tests are characterized by Coolican (2009) as instruments that measure mental estimation and incorporate character scales and furthermore incorporate proportions of mental capacity, for example, insight, etymological capacity, innovative reasoning and so forth. Psychometric tests are basically utilized in instructive settings to help recognize understudies who may require extra learning help (Stapleton, 2001). Vernon and Parry (1949) contend that the factors that psychometric tests, for example, the WISC and KABC scales, use, are consistently the best measures, and for instructive purposes the majority of the significant factors are estimated by very much acknowledged tests. They additionally propose this is one of the primary argumen

Are Fidget Spinners Actually Helpful Stress Relievers
Are Fidget Spinners Actually Helpful Stress Relievers Have you seen many of those three-sided propeller gadgets that everyone seems to be spinning in their hands these days? Do you own several yourself? Fidget spinners have become extremely popular with kids, leading them to be known as either a silly fad, a useful trend, or a distraction worth banning from school, depending on who you ask. Theyre also touted as extremely beneficial, with makers claiming gains such as increased concentration for those with ADHD and autism spectrum issues, and relief from stress, anxiety, and even post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms. But are these claims based on solid research, or are they mere marketing hype? Here is what the science may and may not demonstrate about fidget spinners. What Research Says About Fidget Spinners and Relieving Stress First off, there are no peer-reviewed scientific studies conducted on fidget spinners at this point, so such claims are not based on a body of studies or even a single study but on extrapolation from other research that may seem similar (at least to the fidget spinner manufacturers). That said, there are a few studies and theories they may be thinking of when making these claims. Here are some findings that may support the purported benefits of these gadgets, and some that may not provide a clear link but are useful to know about: Distraction From Rumination One potential route for fidget spinners to be stress relievers is through their capacity to distract us from rumination about things we find stressful. While studies havent examined whether fidget spinners are good distractors, there is research thats looked at the effects of distraction on rumination. One study published in the Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology divided tweens and teens into three groups to see the effects of distraction, meditation, and problem-solving on rumination. Its not surprising that meditation had a positive effect in ameliorating rumination, but the distraction intervention also helped participants shrug off rumination, unlike the problem-solving activity. While the distraction in the study wasnt a fidget spinner but a listening-and-rating activity, the fact that distraction could help people steer themselves away from meditation in ways comparable to meditation is notable. Meditative Effects May Be in Store Mindfulness and meditation have been shown to have significant positive effects on stress, both everyday stress and more serious forms of stress disorders like PTSD. Fidget spinners have the capacity to be good objects of focus for mindfulness meditations, and if they encourage meditation in those who would not normally engage in meditation, this can possibly be considered a benefit of the spinner itself. Movement and ADHD Some research has found that young people who experience ADHD often benefit from movement and feel more focused after being allowed to move their large muscle groups. This isnt necessarily demonstrated to be the case with fidget spinners, though the argument can be made that any movement can serve a similar function. There is also the possibility that the benefits gained from large muscle movements are from the physical exercise involved, as there are many demonstrated benefits to exercise. Mini-Rituals Can Help Those who are on the spectrum may experience stress relief from mini-rituals, or repetitive behaviors that provide continuity and a comforting distraction. Using a fidget spinner, like a mini-meditation or other rituals, can provide this type of outlet. Normalizing a Need to Fidget One anecdotal benefit of fidget spinners is that it normalizes some behaviors that many kids, particularly those on the autism spectrum, find to be difficult to stop but also not shared by other kids in the environment. With fidget spinners, a need to fidget stops being seen as something that sets these children apart and makes them feel different, and more something that everyone is doing, a trend that they are in on, which provides social comfort for many who are just trying to fit in with their peers. Related Stress Relief Strategies In the end, if a fidget spinner helps you to feel less stressed, theres no reason not to use one. At the same time, if they irritate those around you or distract you from your work at school or on the job, its best to leave them at home. If youre looking for helpful ways to relieve stress, there are always these related strategies that may be quieter and less distracting, plus theyre not going out of style anytime soon: Doodling Studies have found that releasing your creative side in the form of doodles can be a helpful stress reliever. Anything from drawing in the margins of a notepad to enjoying a coloring book for adults to creating actual pieces of art can be great for stress relief. But doodling is probably the closest art-based activity to fidget-spinning and is simple to do. Mini-Meditation Mini-meditations, or meditations that last only a few minutes, can be a stressed and busy persons favorite technique. You can try them in several different ways. You can simply count your breaths as they move in and out of your lungs. You can notice, label, and release your thoughts for the next few minutes as they pop into your head. You can even use apps on your phone or your smartwatch to help yourself with mini-meditations throughout the day. Knitting or Crocheting Many people find that knitting, crocheting and other similar crafts like needlepoint can be wonderful stress relievers. They use the same repetitive-motion hand movements and leave people with beautiful results that allow them to express their creativity. They also provide beautiful gifts for others and make less noise than fidget spinners, though the average tween boy would probably be more comfortable with a fidget spinner in any case. Still, though, for many people, these hobbies are some of the best stress relievers. A Word From Verywell Whatever you decide on fidget spinners and other hand-focused stress relievers, simply focusing on stress relief can help you to create habits that can minimize chronic stress. And ultimately, many things can be beneficial if they personally bring you stress relief. They may not replace the need for therapy if you are suffering from an anxiety disorder or PTSD, but every bit of stress relief helps!

MBA Salary Guide for Business Majors
Applicants rarely mention money when they tell admissions boards why they want an MBA, but salary expectations are often a huge draw when it comes to getting a business degree.à Business school tuition is notoriously expensive, and most applicants want to see a return on their investment. Factors That Influence MBA Salaries There are a lot of different factors that can influence the amount of money MBA grads earn. For example, the industry that students work in after graduation has a significant impact on salaries. MBA grads tend to earn the most in consulting, marketing, operations, general management, and finance industries. However, salaries can vary wildly within a single industry. On the low end, marketing professionals can earn about $50,000, and on the high end, they can earn $200,000. The company that you choose to work for has an impact on salary as well. For example, the salary offer you get from a modest start-up on a shoestring budget is going to be much smaller than a salary offer that you get from Goldman Sachs or another company known for offering high starting salaries to MBA grads. If you want a big salary, you may have to consider applying to a big company. Taking a job overseas can also be lucrative. Job level can have just as much of an impact as the industry and company you choose to work for. For example, an entry-level position is going to pay less than a C-level position. Entry-level positions fall on the lowest level in the workplace hierarchy. C-level, also known as C-suite, positions fall on the upper level in the workplace hierarchy and include chief executive positions like chief executive officer (CEO), chief financial officer (CFO), chief operating officer (COO), and chief information officer (CIO). Median MBA Salary The Graduate Management Admission Council conducts an annual survey of corporate recruiters, who share information about starting salary offers for new MBA grads. According to the most recent survey, the median starting salary for MBA grads is $100,000. This is a nice round number that reflects base salary. In other words, it does not take other perks like sign-on bonuses, year-end bonuses, and stock options into account. These perks can add up to big money for MBAs. One MBA who graduated recently from Stanford, reported to Poets Quants that he expected to see a year-end bonus worth more than $500,000. If you are wondering whether or not an MBA will really help you to improve your salary, you may be interested to know that the $100,000 figure reported by corporate recruiters to the Graduate Management Admission Council is almost double the $55,000 median annual starting salary that corporate recruiters report for grads with a bachelors degree. MBA Cost vs. Projected Salary The school that you graduate from can also have an impact on your salary. For example, students who graduate with an MBA degree from Harvard Business School are able to command a much higher salary that students who graduate with an MBA degree from the University of Phoenix. The reputation of the school matters; recruiters take notice of schools that are known for providing a quality education and turn their nose up at schools that do not share that reputation. In general, the higher ranked a school is, the higher the salary expectations are for grads. Of course, that rule doesnââ¬â¢t always hold among business schools with the most stellar rankings. For example, it is possible for a grad from a #20 school to receive a better offer that a grad from a #5 school. It is important to keep in mind that higher-ranked business schools often come with higher tuition tags. Cost is a factor for most MBA applicants. You will have to determine what you can afford and consider the return on investment to determine if it is worth it to get an MBA from a high-priced school. To kick start your research, lets compare the average student debt at some of the countrys top-ranked business schools with the average starting salary for MBAs who graduate from those schools (as reported to U.S. News). U.S. News Ranking School Name Average Student Debt Average Starting Salary #1 Harvard Business School $86,375 $134,701 #4 Stanford Graduate School of Business $80,091 $140,553 #7 University of California - Berkeley (Haas) $87,546 $122,488 #12 New York University (Stern) $120,924 $120,924 #17 University of Texas - Austin (McCombs) $59,860 $113,481 #20 Emory University (Goizueta) $73,178 $116,658 Source: U.S. News

Slavery During The 19th Century - 1446 Words
Africa was once a thriving and wonderful continent filled with luxurious and wealthy kingdoms, but that had all changed when a new and appalling type of slavery was introduced. Around the 18th century, Africa became an ideal place for Europeans to trade and buy slaves from. The slave trade in Africa seemed to be manageable and somewhat peaceful before the Europeans brought in a new type of slavery. When the Europeans bought slaves from Africans, they kept them as slaves for life which were very different from how long slaves were kept in Africa. Europeans kept slaves in extremely poor conditions and treated them as if they were less than human. These actions caused a great spike in the slave trade all over the world and manyâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Buckets were placed in these compartments for bathroom uses and other necessary uses (). Slaves that were placed far from these buckets had difficulty in reaching them because of the number of other slaves around them (Falconbridge, 1788). This situation would cause slaves to release themselves where they were and would cause several health issues and diseases to arise (Falconbridge, 1788). Later on in his account, Falconbridge describes the upkeep of the slaves on the voyages. The slaves were usually fed twice a day, but on most other ships they were only fed once (Falconbridge, 1788). Their food would be severed in small buckets and slaves would be placed in groups of ten for each bucket (Falconbridge, 1788). ââ¬Å"Upon the Negroes refusing to take sustenance, I have seen coals of fire, glowing hot, put on a shovel and placed so near their lips as to scorch and burn them. And this has been accompanied with threats of forcing them to swallow the coals if they any longer persisted in refusing to eat.â⬠(Falconbridge, 1788). Upon the resistance of the obligations of eating, slaves were extremely punished for disobeying and these punishments were severely cruel and inhumane. Brown versus Board of Education Free Essays
Brown versus the Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas was one of a group of cases that was being brought before the Supreme Court in the early 1950ââ¬â¢s by the NAACP to challenge the concept of ââ¬Å"separate but equal. â⬠The story began in 1950 when several parents went up against the Topeka school board that would only allow black children to attend one of the four segregated schools in the area. Oliver Brown was one of this group, having brought his daughter to the local school, tried to enroll her and was turned away (National Park Service, 10). We will write a custom essay sample on Brown versus Board of Education or any similar topic only for you Order Now The case was brought to court by the NAACPââ¬â¢s Legal Defense Fund, and was later combined with several other cases such as Briggs v. Elliot and Bolling v. Sharpe (National Park Service, 10). The NAACP brought the suit with the focus that school segregation was a violation of the Fourteenth Amendmentââ¬â¢s clause that provided for equal protection. Its original purpose had been to ensure all blacks equal status as citizens of the United States after the Civil War (Martin 2). The legal team also put forth that when black children attended racially segregated schools, it caused them harm by creating a ââ¬Å"stigma of inferiority (Martin 2). â⬠This stigma was supported by research stating that racial segregation could have a harmful impact on a childââ¬â¢s development as they grew and on individual self-worth. There was even evidence presented of the bad effects that segregation could also have on whites (Martin, 11). The Supreme Court, under the leadership of Justice Earl Warren, found in favor of the plaintiffââ¬â¢s to end school segregation on May 17, 1954 (National Park Service 11-12). Overturning the precedent of Plessy v. Ferguson, which originally established the concept of separate but equal, Brown v. Board of Education opened up the doors of public and higher education to blacks all over the country. This also eventually opened up doors to new fields and opportunities that had once been closed off. Today, this landmark decision has been the basis for the Civil Rights movement that reached its zenith during the 1960ââ¬â¢s and later groundbreaking legislation (National Park Service 14). It also laid the foundation for other equal rights movements, including the struggle by those with disabilities who wanted equal access to public facilities and end to job discrimination. American education now can offer a free and appropriate public education to all, regardless of color, race, disability or any other distinguishing factor. Just as children who were black were given the chance to attend integrated schools, the case laid the legal framework for later legislation such as the Individuals with Disabilities Act, or IDEA, that mandated educational standards and services for children with disabilities. Without Brown v. Board of Education laying the framework for these kinds of laws, other student populations would not have achieved the equality they have. The legacy of Brown is one of tolerance, equality and the lingering memory that in order to preserve the freedoms that we have, we sometimes have to fight for them. One avenue that freedom can be one in is the courtroom, where sweeping changes can be brought into reality. References Martin, Waldo E. Brown v. Board of Education: A Brief History with Documents. One Step Back â⬠Using Smaller Markets To Break Into Larger Ones
One Step Back ââ¬â Using Smaller Markets To Break Into Larger Ones When breaking into a large market ââ¬â especially where you have no prior experience ââ¬â rejection is a certainty. Not everyone can nail the perfect pitch on the first try, and writers should keep their heads up and keep trying. But what happens when the rejections keep coming in, no matter what you try? Each person would have their own reasons as to why they arent nailing the pitch. It might be the pitch being bland, it might be the ideas not hitting the target, or it might be good, solid ideas that have been covered already. To help hone what part of the process is letting you down, you can try pitching to publications lower down the rung. This move backwards can either be very simple or extremely hard, depending how niche your target publication is. Someone writing about technology could probably have an easier time than those wanting to write about model trains. If moving downwards seems impossible, consider going sideways: find a publication which doesnt necessarily feature your niche, but still utilizes it. Once youve found your target, its time to start! You may find that articles that were rejected from your original target are more than suitable for the smaller publications, given the fact that theyre in more need to fill up slots for their publication schedule. Once you get an acceptance, you can develop a working relationship with the editor: talk them through pitches, note what they reject and accept, see why they reject specific articles and hone your pitches and ideas to suit them. After a few months, you may begin to notice that the publication becomes very easy to pitch to. This means its time to spread your wings and go for bigger, better-paying publications ââ¬â mainly, your original target! Use your new-found skills to make a second attempt at landing that acceptance. The best part is, any queries that fail to strike the fancy of your target can very easily become accepted ideas with the editor you work with. I learned this the hard way when I decided that bite-sized, factual articles would be great fun to write. I was first drawn to Listverse because of its simplicity: research ten points, write the article, send it in, and get paid $100 for the enjoyment of creating a well-researched article. It seemed ideal, but I couldnt break in at all. I decided to try the waters with another website, TopTenz, despite their paying only half of what Listverse does. They liked the ideas that Listverse didnt, and I began to work with the editor of TopTenz to get my ideas out there and earning some money. I learned a lot from the months of working with the editor, and when I look back at the pitches I gave Listverse, I cringe at how naive I was. While I still work with the TopTenz editor closely, I recently decided to use my new-found knowledge to try to break into Listverse once again. On the second pitch of my re-attempt, I got a green light that eventually lead to an acceptance and payment! I highly doubt I could have crafted a winning pitch if it were not for my experience with TopTenz. If youre having issues getting into a publication, try mastering the level below it. Once youve done that, the only feasible step is to move up ââ¬â and thats when youll be much better equipped to land that gig youve wanted.

The Barriers To Communication
The Barriers To Communication While there are many subtleties to communication between people with some basic skills can actually help you to be even effective communicator. On this assignment we will explore barriers to listening and strategies for effective listening, Barriers to accurate perception and barriers to effective verbal communication and strategies for accurate perception and lastly strategies for effective verbal communication. Listening may not seem like a complicated process when someone speaks you listen. As you are ready to receive the information and being communicated you are likely not actually realizing that you are decoding the dialogue or interpreting it Barriers to Communication If noise is whatever interferes with communication between sender and receiver (and vice versa), its important to understand what causes noise-what are the main barriers to communication. There are three main types of barriers: external, internal, and semantic. à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¢ External barriers to communications include environmental and visual distractions. Suppose you are listening to your professor and suddenly you see your favorite movie star walk by in the hallway. Do you think you would hear and understand everything your professor was saying at that moment? Or maybe youre on a date and having a hard time hearing what your companion is saying because of the racket in the restaurant. à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¢ Internal barriers come from within the receiver. They include not paying attention or not listening, boredom, and lack of interest. If a student is sitting in class daydreaming instead of listening to the instructor, for example, how much communication is taking place? à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¢ Semantic barriers come from differences in language, education, and culture. Obviously if the sender is speaking in English and the receiver doesnt understand English, theres a problem. But even if the sender and receiver speak English, they may not speak the same dialect. The words they use may not mean the same thing. If you order a soda in Washington, DC, for example, youll get a soft drink. If you order a soda in Detroit, youll get a drink made of soda water and flavored syrup with ice cream floating in it. If youre from the United States and youre speaking to a Scot from Glasgow, you may have a hard time simply understanding his Pronunciation. And your accent may be incomprehensible to him! Four Steps to Effective Interpersonal Communication If you are the sender, its your job to find ways to penetrate the noise that prevents clear communication. Following these four steps in your communication will help you do so: 1. Focus your message 2. Magnify the listeners attention 3. Penetrate barriers 4. Listen actively. Focus Your Message Focusing your message means planning before you speak. Think carefully about what you want to say and how you want to say it. Decide what your goal is: to inform, to persuade, to direct, or to do something else. Be sure you understand who your audience is so you understand where the audience is coming from as it receives your message. Make sure your message is specific and concise. Get to the point; dont be diverted into side issues. Present your message politely, and be objective-state all sides positions fairly before arguing your own. (If the listener perceives that you are biased, this itself can become an important barrier to communication.) Magnify the Listeners Attention Ask yourself: Why should my listener care about what I have to say? You must create interest-make your message relevant to the listener. If your instructor suddenly announces that something will be on your next exam, youre more likely to pay attention. If you announce that what youre about to say will save your listeners money, youre likely to grab their attention. Find something in your message that your listener can relate to and make sure you highlight that. Make it clear that your message is important. For example, if you suddenly announce that What Im about to say could save your life, before you discuss a crucial safety issue, youll grab the listeners interest. But your ideas must really be important. Simply declaring that they are wont do it-you must persuade the audience through the clarity and logic of your arguments and your evidence that your message really is significant. Again, think about your message from the audiences perspective instead of your own. This means knowing your audience. Deliver your message so that it naturally draws your listeners attention. Penetrate Barriers One serious barrier to clear communication is vagueness. If you say, There was a fire downtown last night, you have communicated little. If you say, however, Twenty fire trucks from three different towns fought an inferno last night that destroyed an entire city block, including a fireworks factory, your concrete description has communicated a good deal more. The listener now understands that youre talking about a major disaster, not a fire in a trash can. Your concrete description helps the listener create a mental picture, or visualize the blaze.

Summary and Response Essay Essay
How often do we actually use cursive writing these days? And if we donââ¬â¢t write incursive, should we continue to teach our children how to? This is one of the biggest questions in our education system today. Many states are eliminating this practice, while others are trying to preserve this slowing fading art. Dr. Vi Supon, tells us is in the article, Cursive Writing: Are Itââ¬â¢s Last Days approaching?, ââ¬Å"Indicators are that technological advances and state mandated tests, in addition to other variables, are forcing cursive writing to become a casualty of the American educational landscape.â⬠Some people believe that the historical aspect of cursive writing is one we need to preserve. Before typewriters and computers, everything had to be hand written. It wasnââ¬â¢t just a form of communication in the past; many saw it as an indicator to a personââ¬â¢s level of education. In the past penmanship was a separate grade on report cards and students had to spend 45 minutes everyday on handwriting. Today, students might get 10 ââ¬â 15 minutes a few days a week for handwriting instruction, if any. (Carpenter, 2007). Teachers today are spending more time on keyboarding skills and are teaching it at a much younger age than before. Another concern that is addressed in this debate is students who have learning disabilities and students that use English as a second language. It is harder for these students to read and write, so teachers tend to have the students use print or block form. The block form helps to better enable translations, helps with comprehension and concept attainments. When they understand what they are reading, they are better able to communicate effectively. It also helps the students focus on their compositions and not worry about their handwriting, which leads to a more logical thought process and the mechanical components are more likely in place. The block form also makes reading and assessing students work easier for the teachers to grade. And with them spending less time on deciphering writing, they are able to spend less time on grading and more time teaching. Teachers today have more content to teach and need to concentrate on the requirements for the stateà tests. After reading this article I asked myself the same questions I first asked you. Having school-age children myself, I realized how much school has changed since I myself was in school. I was always taught when composing a paper to first put all your thoughts on paper and then compose into a rough draft and then final draft. All of these were always suppose to be in cursive writing. After we had our written final and the teacher looked at it, we had to type out our papers, either on a typewriter or on the computer. I always struggled with this due to the fact that I have awful handwriting. But my kids donââ¬â¢t seem to have any issue because their writings are done on the computer the first time and they donââ¬â¢t have the anxiety of how their handwriting looks. Having recently returned to school myself, I have found that a lot of the teaching methods have changed. And even though it is an adjustment, it is more practical. Thinking back I realized how much extra work I did by writing and then rewriting, followed by typing. And if I wouldnââ¬â¢t have spent quite so much time on trying to get my paper to look nicer, maybe I would have gotten a better grade on the report for the mechanics of the paper. Without I doubt, this debate will likely continue for quite some time. The historical, practical and essential aspects still raise many questions in todayââ¬â¢s society. With our youth becoming more technolically advanced, we will more than likely continue to see other changes to our education system. Unfortunately, there will be other casualties of our changing educational landscape. But only time will tell what the outcomes will be. References Carpenter, C. Not to take rejection nor the opportunity to work with Pittsburgh native award winning Director, Antoine Fuqua, he humbled himself to a role as a movie extra. Not long into filming he ran into fellow actor, Tyrese Gibson, who had a featured role in the film. His friend asked, why he was a movie extra? After discussion and finagling, Carl was offered the role as Tyreseââ¬â¢s characterââ¬â¢s friend. In the editing, Tyreseââ¬â¢s entire character was cut, as Carlââ¬â¢s character. Australian Privacy Law to Protect Privacy of Teenager â⬠Free Samples
Question: Discuss about the Australian Privacy Law to Protect Privacy of Teenager. Answer: The Australian Policies in protecting the Privacy of Teenagers A privacy policy is a document which contains ways in which a party gathers, uses and disseminates information. This analysis focuses on Facebook's privacy policy and whether it complies with Australia's privacy policies in protecting the privacy of teenagers between the age of 13-15. The Australian privacy principles are contained in the Privacy Act of 1988[1]. The Act in section 6 defines information as; information which is recorded in material form or not can be true or false and should be identifiable about an individual[2]. Such information can include signatures, bank records, and medical records. Australian policies require online websites and platforms such as Facebook to protect personal information. Australian privacy policies have 13 principles which govern how information should be collected and used[3]. Under the guide on how to handle personal information under the security breaches of 2011, there is a guide on how organizations need to process handle personal information. The UN convention on the rights of a child, which Australia is a signatory recognizes the rights of a child to privacy in Article 16 requires that a child's privacy is protected. Article 1 defines a child as anyone under the age of 18. Article 4 requires that the government takes adequate measures to protect the rights of a child[4]. Additionally, Australia also adopts section 17 of ICCPR which also recognizes the right to privacy of teenagers and everyone else[5]. The Australia's privacy framework, has always been a no overseas regime. The policies on overseas require that a person disclosing an Australian's teenager's personal information, ought to take due diligence in disclosing such information, and ensure there will be no breach. Facebook's privacy policies in protecting the privacy of teenagers The Facebook privacy policies are more of default settings for public viewing, as opposed to private. This implies that users who are complacent are likely to forget to adjust the settings. Consequently, this exposes such users to the invasion of their privacy by malicious users. Also, the services of Facebook are changing continuously. Thus users have to keep abreast with the changes. Failure to do so could mean adverse implications regarding privacy. Such changes have been seen in the changes in their news feed whereby people are allowed to view the changes in one's account. Also, there were variations in the timelines, where people can be able to see different updates on status, photos, relationship and sometimes location. Such timeline information creates a fingerprint regarding a person while leaving a layer of information; hence teenager's information is at a risk of exposure. The A.G of California made a directive requiring all mobile companies and developers to comply with their privacy law, which requires that a policy statement is posted, ensuring that all users know that their information is being collected. Facebook signed this agreement and agreed to be bound by the California principles. Although the policies mainly applied to the State of California, the rules set a benchmark on the same. The gaps between Australia Privacy laws and Facebook Privacy Policies There exists a gap between the Australian privacy laws and Facebook privacy policies in regards to protection of users, particularly for children. Most Facebook users and teenagers, also are not concerned and sometimes do not understand the implications of the role of information found in such social networks. Despite there being tutorials on how users can control their information, advertisements are not controlled by users and teenagers can stumble upon information which is not age appropriate[6]. Therefore, in regards to the Facebook privacy policies, they are no adequate measures to guide consent on teenagers of between 13-18, who may not even understand what they are not consenting to. In regards to Facebook's privacy policy, several factors need to be considered. One is the issue of consent, which ought to be informed, unambiguous, and made freely[7]. However, given the Facebook processes, it is hard to determine whether they meet the privacy requirements. The question as to the consenting age of teenagers arises, and whether they are able to consent and make the right decisions regarding their privacy. Also, Facebook consenting is problematic because users are not able to control the content they can see or is displayed on their home page especially advertisements. However, the privacy options regarding what should be viewed by the public, and limiting to "public, friends or me." The policies of Facebook also tells users how their data will be used, displayed, shared and transferred[8]. The challenges in protecting privacy are that there are constant changes in technology which make it hard for Australian privacy laws to constantly keep up with such changes. Also, the Australian policies are not specific to children. Accordingly, the existing Australian legislations, the government, Australian organizations and other agencies are not required to notify users, when a breach of privacy occurs. This puts users to further risks, and even lack knowledge when breaches occur. Recommendations Teenagers should be educated about measures they can take to protect their own privacy. Teenagers should also be guided by guardians on how to be familiar with the privacy policies and privacy settings on social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. It is important that the teenagers are taught about fingerprinting; and know that every time they post on Facebook, there is a digital footprint that will stay there. Legislation should require users to be notified when breaches occur, and advise them on necessary precautions they need to take before further breaches occur. This will also help in retaining the trust of information of persons where a breach has already occurred. Internal organizational principles can also be helpful when they restrict how personal information is obtained and disseminated. The Privacy Act of 1988 should be amended so that the organizations notify the affected individuals and the privacy commissioner when breaches which may have adverse effects occur. The Australian Commissioner on protecting personal information also recommends, checking privacy settings, reading policies on privacy, reflecting on how much information is revealed and asking questions regarding one's privacy[9]. Any changes in privacy policies should be brought to the attention of the users. Conclusion Most social media platforms give users a wide array of privacy settings. It is important that teenagers choose their privacy settings wisely; because most users are in a position to decide what they would wish to share. Most information on social media with a public profile allow for different people to access it. However, everyone has the discretion to choose what they are most comfortable with. When it comes to teenagers, discretion is dicey because most of them are not mature enough to make decisions affecting their privacy, therefore legislations need to recognize the importance of parents in giving such consents and monitoring teenagers while using Facebook. Life, Death and Beyond free essay sample
A comparative analysis of the beliefs about the absolute forms of existence as postulated in Platonic Socrates and Taoism. This paper compares and contrasts beliefs about life and death and the possibility of existence beyond death. The author examines these beliefs as exemplified in several philosophical frameworks: Platos Republic, The Phaedo, The Apology, and as illustrated in Taoism as indicated in Wandering on the Way: Early Taoist Tales and Parables of Chuang Tzu. From the paper: The Chunag Tzus idea of life after death is very different than Platos in the absolute sense, but they share similar details. One shared detail is that death may not be a bad thing. In The Phaedo, one has Plato arguing that all true philosophers must join him in death. If they truly love wisdom, then they should shed off this illness that is mortal life and venture into the immortal where true wisdom can be actualized, where true knowledge exists. We will write a custom essay sample on Life, Death and Beyond or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Chunag Tzu holds a bit differentlyone just cannot know. Knowledge about death cannot be actualized. It is an unknown. In fact all things are unknown. The only knowledge one can really have is that the Tao exists. In Platonism, truth exists through logic and reason. In Taoism, it is through contradiction. In Taoism, A is not A, because this world is flux, one thing is never the same thing.

Workplace Motivation Essays
Workplace Motivation Essays Workplace Motivation Essay Workplace Motivation Essay Motivation in the workplace is the single most influential factor in achievement of higher productivity and profitability by an organization.à Over the years, psychologists have concurred with social analysts and workplace managers that employees indeed act as the main springboard to effectively promote objectivity of their organizations management plans (Weiner, 1985).à It is from this notion that motivation in most of the organizations has been assimilated not just at the top management levels only, but at the lower sections to derive genuine intrinsic returns.à Owing to this consideration, this paper seeks to explore workplace motivation strategies, their related theories and affects in organizations workplace settings.à Deriving this interlink, the paper outlines various recommendations that could be employed to effect the necessary changes and therefore assimilate holistic productivity and progress.2. Affects of motivational strategies on work productivitya) Introduc tionIn my organization where I work [XYZ] workplace motivation has been the defining factor for its current success.à As an airline company, the management underscores the need to strongly motivate the employees as they are entirely independent in their operations by nature of their jobs. Though the concept of giving the highest possible quality to the consumers through motivating the staff was initially not effectively understood, entry of the current Chief Executive officer made the notion easy to grasp and apply with ease.b) Organizational efforts to promote performanceDue to the high level competition in the airline industry, measures that have the capacity to promote returns are always welcome.à As a result, workers motivation has been assimilated as a major facet for enhancing greater returns.à Therefore, the management has facilitated the formation and operation of teams and groups at the lower levels of employees.à Use of teamwork and team leadership has therefor e brought the staff and employees at the decision making level as they are entrusted with all the major activities that take place during flights.à Indeed, this model been hailed and emulated by other airlines in that the staff is entrusted to address all the emergent issues to generate the highest possible satisfaction to the consumers.Besides, unlike other airline companies that keep on hiring and firing their staff, XYZ observes a high retention system with internal promotions serving as a major motivational consideration.à After the terrorist attack at world trade center in US, XYZ maintained its entire staff as others strongly downsized to cater for the crisis period as more people drifted away from air flights.à Top leadership and management officials are identified and promoted from the teamsââ¬â¢ operations efficiency. Such emergent leadership has been a strong motivating facet to the level lower employees as they seek to follow the same trend to get at the top.B ridging the gap between the top management and the lower level employees has perhaps been the best motivating notion that the company employs to boost the morale of the workers in their duties.à Since the onset of the current economic crisis the management has sought to break the previous hierarchical mode of management and bring together all the staff to work together at all times.à By bringing them closer to the management, it became much easier to understand their overall needs and sentiments therefore pro-actively solving them.à Indeed, discussions and problem analysis between the management and staff in search for solutions and alternatives has become part of the XYZ culture.à This brings out the sense of ownership and identity which drives the employees to work in their organizations with great efforts as they would have done for their personal jobs.à It is from the above efforts that XYZ maintained its profitability after the terrorist attack in the year at the world trade center and the current economic downturn as the employees seek to gather more efforts from the continuous motivation they generate.c)à Employees resistance to increasing productivityIt is worth noting that though the management has over the years been strongly committed to enhance greater motivation, strong resistance has also been increasing with time.à Some of the employees view the current initiatives as a facet to divide them in that some cannot be able to get the different team leaders positions or being promoted.à Though the management has been considering this to be part of the anti development group that generally views any form of development from a negative point of view, the company leadership has often been cautioned to ensure that it does not spread to the rest of the staff.à This has prompted the management to establish a general criterion to be used for promotions and awards therefore preventing any sense of sabotage among them.à To add to that, bulk of the major changes have seen introduction of modernistic highly computerized and automated systems to not only reduce the time of service to the consumers, but promote the general quality and utility equivalence of the payment.à However, this has been interpreted to indicate possible threats to their jobs even with the management confirmation of total retention for all the staff.à This has further been linked with the overall resistant nature of the human beings in their work places emanating from their complexity analysis of the present events but overshadowed by the future uncertainty.d)à Management philosophy of motivation and practicesApplication of motivation systems by the company has been deeply based on the understanding of interplay between the different needs of the employees and their efforts to see higher productivity.à As a result, the management overview has been in a twin fold model where the general returns to the staff acts as the main drivi ng force to their general efforts.à Though this has been cited to be the major factor in the company behind its success, a general shift was recorded when the employees suggested their allowances reduction to anchor the general companys cost reduction strategy.à As Hatch underscores in his model of cultural dynamic, the ability of the staff to effectively support the management decisions depends on how the leadership will harmonize their views and needs of the workers to reduce the overall resistance to infer the necessary motivation for work and innovation (2000).à In this respectà XYZ brought sought to bring the management closer to the staff by invoking the necessary autonomy in their work, reducing the hierarchical management system, and incorporating the employees in the decision making process.3. Implications of applying other motivational theoriesa) Vrooms expectancy theoryThough XYZ application of motivational theories has been highly integrative of the different theories due to its nature, some have not been effectively applied.à To begin with, Vrooms expectancy theory indicates that motivation to the staff and employees is based not only on the material well being, but to attain the necessary anticipated outcome as the general achievement and assimilate the belief that the exerted effort has been helpful in promoting the status of the company.à Application of this theory would be of great essence to the company management by being self driven from the onset, carefully self evaluated, and highly cautious to raise productivity and profitability of the company.à However, its application would perhaps be highly controversial due to lack of the necessary guidance as exemplified by the present management of XYZ.à However, it would be a great relevance in reducing the overall expenses and therefore put greater emphasis on productivity and profitability of the company. To the employees, this theory would infer mixed reactions on their perceptions in that the general assimilated attitude towards the company could be essential in enhancing their efforts towards higher production.à However, it also has the capacity to be misinterpreted to indicate oppression by the management towards the employees and therefore become a major stabling block for productivity and progress in the company.à It is therefore essential that its application be effected instantaneously to give the correct message to the employees.b) Aldefers ERC theoryThen Aldefers ERC theory indicates that for all the expected returns to be assimilated, the staff would be required to attain different set standards to get the necessary benefits attached to them (Bollesm, 1975). Though this would infer further need of grater returns to the company, the management may indeed get the direct opposite.à Motivation as indicated in the earlier sections in this paper should be self driving without a sense of coercion. Possible standards should always be est ablished in consultation with the staff to affect the general acceptability of the system by all.For the employees in the company, this would be viewed as part of the general initiative to render them unworkable.à Indeed, it has the capacity to spark unrest from the general sense of inferiority to attain the different set standards.à It is imperative that such level marks are set at the possible levels that the staff would be able to attain and more importantly in teams.4. ConclusionIt is from the above discussion that this paper concludes by supporting thesis statement that motivation in the workplace is the single most influential factor in achievement of higher productivity and profitability by an organization. It is important that staff is carefully handled by the management to generate the necessary perception from them for higher productivity.à Motivation should be integrated to the general culture of the company in a manner that all the major operations project to pr ofitability.à To add to that, the management should give the employees the necessary room to contribute creatively and promote innovation for higher returns.
