Brown versus the Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas was one of a group of cases that was being brought before the Supreme Court in the early 1950’s by the NAACP to challenge the concept of â€Å"separate but equal. † The story began in 1950 when several parents went up against the Topeka school board that would only allow black children to attend one of the four segregated schools in the area. Oliver Brown was one of this group, having brought his daughter to the local school, tried to enroll her and was turned away (National Park Service, 10). Elliot and Bolling v. Sharpe (National Park Service, 10). The NAACP brought the suit with the focus that school segregation was a violation of the Fourteenth Amendment’s clause that provided for equal protection. Its original purpose had been to ensure all blacks equal status as citizens of the United States after the Civil War (Martin 2). The legal team also put forth that when black children attended racially segregated schools, it caused them harm by creating a â€Å"stigma of inferiority (Martin 2). † This stigma was supported by research stating that racial segregation could have a harmful impact on a child’s development as they grew and on individual self-worth. There was even evidence presented of the bad effects that segregation could also have on whites (Martin, 11). The Supreme Court, under the leadership of Justice Earl Warren, found in favor of the plaintiff’s to end school segregation on May 17, 1954 (National Park Service 11-12). Overturning the precedent of Plessy v. Ferguson, which originally established the concept of separate but equal, Brown v. Board of Education opened up the doors of public and higher education to blacks all over the country. This also eventually opened up doors to new fields and opportunities that had once been closed off. Today, this landmark decision has been the basis for the Civil Rights movement that reached its zenith during the 1960’s and later groundbreaking legislation (National Park Service 14). It also laid the foundation for other equal rights movements, including the struggle by those with disabilities who wanted equal access to public facilities and end to job discrimination. American education now can offer a free and appropriate public education to all, regardless of color, race, disability or any other distinguishing factor. Just as children who were black were given the chance to attend integrated schools, the case laid the legal framework for later legislation such as the Individuals with Disabilities Act, or IDEA, that mandated educational standards and services for children with disabilities. Without Brown v. Board of Education laying the framework for these kinds of laws, other student populations would not have achieved the equality they have. The legacy of Brown is one of tolerance, equality and the lingering memory that in order to preserve the freedoms that we have, we sometimes have to fight for them. Zaetek 2.1.3. Delo z okni 2.1.4. Windows pomo 1. Uvod Z uveljavitvijo osebnih raunalnikov tako za osebno kot za poslovno rabo, se je pojavil problem komunikacije med uporabnikom in raunalnikom. Pojavili so se razlini operacijski sistemi, ki so vsak po svoje reevali ta problem. Najbolj se je na zaetku raziril operacijski sistem DOS, ki pa je bil za marsikoga zelo kompliciran, za zahtevne uporabnike pa premalo zmogljiv. Da bi zadovoljili vse bolj zahtevne uporabnike in poenostavili delo, so v programski hii Microsoft razvili vmesnik, ki v celoti poteka v grafinem okolju. To je grafini vmesnik Microsoft Windows (slovensko Okna), ki temelji na operacijskem sistemu DOS. Prva razliica Windowsov je bila seveda zelo preprosta, vendar zelo zanesljiva, kar za noveje razliice ne moremo trditi. Prva zelo uspena razliica je bil Windows 3.1x. Sledili so ji: Windows 95, Windows NT (mreni sistem), Windows CE (za dlannike), Windows 98 in trenutno najnoveja razliica Windows 2000. 2. Kaj je Windows ? Microsoft Windows je grafino veopravilno okolje, ki tee v operacijskem sistemu MS DOS. Tudi noveje razliice Windows 95, 98 in 2000 uporabljajo za delovanje DOS, eprav nam ni treba posebej prej nalagati ga na raunalnik. Te razliice imajo DOS-ove ukaze v operacijski sistem e vgrajene. Ne dri povsem trditev, da je Windows operacijski sistem. Je le grafini vmesnik. Programi pisani za Windows okolje imajo standardiziran izgled in ukazno zgradbo, zaradi esar jih je laje uporabljati. Odlikujejo ga naslednje lastnosti: - poenotenost programskega vmesnika, - veopravilnost, - enostavna izmenjava podatkov med programi, - maksimalna izkorienost raunalnika, - sistemske nastavitve na enem mestu in - enostavnost dela. V nadaljevanju se bom posvetil trenutno najbolj razirjeni razliici Windows, to je Windows 98. 2.1. Windows 98 e boste sedaj kupovali osebni raunalnik vam bodo prodajalci prav gotovo svetovali tudi nakup Windows 98. To je najnoveje okolje za delo z drugimi raunalnikimi programi, ki pa je le nadgradnja Windows 95. Osnova tega okolja so barvne sliice oz. ikone in meniji. Omogoa tudi upravljanje z diski (delo z datotekami). 2.1.1. Prvi pogled Na prvi pogled izgleda Windows 98 zelo preprosto. Vse kar vidimo po zagonu je: - Namizje ponavadi opiemo kot celotni osnovni zaslon programa Windows, eprav ta izraz v ojem pomenu besede pomeni ozadje. Namizje je ob prvem zagonu obiajno pastelno zelene barve in prekriva skoraj celotno povrino zaslona. Kasneje lahko barvo ozadja spremenimo ali celo vstavimo poljubno sliko. - Ikone so sliice, ki predstavljajo razline programe oz. blinjice do programov. Po prvem zagonu vidimo na namizju najpogosteje dve ikoni: Moj raunalnik in Ko. Ikone lahko poljubno dodajamo in razporejamo po namizju. Program zaenemo z dvakratnim klikom mike na ikono. - Gumb start je najpomembneji gumb programa Windows. S klikom na ta gumb lahko odpremo meni start, s katerim je mogoe hitro in enostavno zaeti katerokoli opravilo v Windows. Meni start vsebuje: ukaze za zagon programov, seznam na zadnje uporabljenih dokumentov, spremembo nastavitev, iskanje datotek in map, prikaz pomoi in izklop programa Windows. - Opravilna vrstica vsebuje gumb start in tudi gumbe trenutno zagnanih datotek. Nahaja se na dnu zaslona, lahko pa jo premaknemo levo,desno ali na vrh zaslona. e uporabljamo ve programov hkrati lahko zelo enostavno preklapljamo med njimi tako, da kliknemo gumb elenega programa v opravilni vrstici. - Ko ikona je nadomestek tipke del. e torej elimo izbrisati datoteko ali ikono, jo samo povleemo v ko. Nastavimo lahko kako dolgo datoteke ostanejo v kou dokler se dokonno ne izbriejo oz. koliko % prostora naega trdega diska lahko zavzame ko. - Moj raunalnik ikona je namenjena odpiranju okna, v katerem lahko vidimo vsebino naega raunalnika, poiemo podatke o diskovnih pogonih ter tiskalnikih, ki so prikljueni na na raunalnik. Lahko pa tudi odpremo tudi okno za spreminjanje nastavitev celotnega sistema. - Ura na desni strani opravilne vrstice kae toen as. Z dvakratnim klikom na uro lahko vidimo koledar za tekoi mesec. e imate v raunalniku zvono kartico boste poleg ure videli tudi ikono za nastavitev glasnosti. 1.1.2. Zaetek Windows si ogledamo s pritiskom na gumb start in v meniju, ki se nam odpre e na gumb programi. Tu lahko vidimo kateri programi so nameeni v programu Windows. Na zaetku seveda nimamo veliko programov. Te moramo kasneje posebej namestiti. Vendar lahko vseeno kar nekaj stvari ponemo s programi, ki so e priloeni programu Windows.
